  • 2 cups water

Instructions

  1. Caramelize the Onions:
  2. Heat butter or olive oil in a large pot over medium-low heat.
  3. Add sliced onions and cook until caramelized, about 30-40 minutes.
  4. Stir in minced garlic, sugar, salt, and black pepper, and cook for an additional 5 minutes.
  5. Simmer the Soup:
  6. Pour vegetable broth, water, and white wine (if using) into the pot with onions.
  7. Add bay leaf and bring to a simmer. Cook for 15-20 minutes.
  8. Prepare the Bread and Cheese:
  9. Preheat broiler in the oven.
